Ontario Government Mulls Demerit Points for Distracted Driving

Both the government and the courts in Ontario are taking an increasingly critical stance on distracted driving. Two recent events help illustrate this view, as well as point to the direction and enforcement of future laws in the area.

First, although already illegal, distracted driving in Ontario does not require, as is the case in other provinces, the deduction of demerit points. This may however be about to change. Ontario’s Minister of Transportation has stated that stiffer laws and regulations are imminent, and demerit points may well be within the package of anti-distracted driving measures being introduced in the near future.*

In 1992, Stella Liebeck, an elderly lady residing in the State of New Mexico spilled a hot cup of McDonald’s coffee on her pelvic region, sustaining severe injuries as a result, including third degree burns on 6 percent of her body. Tony Lafazanis received his Bachelor of Laws in 1981 upon graduation from Osgoode Hall Law School, and was called to the Ontario bar in 1983. He is a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada, the Ontario Trial Lawyers Association, Toronto Lawyers Association and the Hellenic Canadian Lawyers Association. Tony is also a Greek-speaking lawyer that can communicate the entire process in the Greek language.
